The hunting party fanned out, encircling Killian in the forest glade. He crouched low, a growl rumbling in his chest while his crimson eyes tracked them.
One guard nudged his horse too close. With blinding speed, Killian lunged and seized the rider by his leg. The fae had no time to cry out before he was ripped from the saddle and thrown to the ground.
Killian was on him in an instant, his teeth tearing viciously into the guard's unprotected throat. Dark blood sprayed wildly as the faeâs screams turned to wet gurgles.
I watched in frozen horror, bile rising in my throat at the sounds of flesh rending and bone crunching.
Shouts and the clunk of the weapons filled the glade. Ramiel's face contorted in disgusted fury. He drew an arrow and loosed it at Killian. It whizzed by, lightning-fast and invisible. The razor-tip buried itself deep in Killianâs thigh.
Killian jerked but did not slow his savage feasting, oblivious to the injury. He ripped another chunk of bloody flesh from the dead guard's ribs.
Ramiel nocked another arrow.
Something in me snapped, perhaps the remainder of the bond I felt it in my heart. The weak pulsing.
âStop it!â I shrieked, half falling from my gellar and stumbling through the knee-high grass.
I recklessly put myself between Ramiel and Killian.
I couldnât explain why. I just did. Because a voice in my head told me to.
âStand down, girl!â Ramiel commanded. âYour wolf cannot be savedâhe must be put down before more of my people die!â
I flung my arms wide. âDon't you fucking dare!â Desperate tears burned my eyes.
âUnless you wish to join the corpses he's leaving behind, get out of my way!â
Ignoring the fae prince, I spun around and approached Killian, who was still preoccupied with ripping apart the body of the fae guard.
At my approach, his bloodshot eyes lifted, a low rumble emanating from his chest.
Black and red dripped down his chin and shirt and into the grass, and I felt sick to my stomach all over again at the sight of this gore.
âKillian?â I called softly.
He watched me intently with his head tilted at an unnatural angle, pieces of flesh falling from his bloody jaw.
âYou know me, Killian.â My voice hitched, but I crept closer. âCome back to me.â
He blinked rapidly, and a small whine escaped his throat.
When the distance separating us shrunk to only a handful of steps, I extended my arm and showed him my scar. âDo you remember this?â I asked. My lips trembled and my words wobbled. âDo you remember about Seattle? And rock festivals. And how you wanted to be a doctor?â I was losing it. I felt it. All my emotions coming up and choking me from the inside. It was so hard to talk and to breathe, and I thought of just letting my tears flow freely, of throwing myself at Killian.
Glancing over my shoulder, I saw the hunting party watching us warily. Ramiel and Aodal had their weapons poised, prepared to end this.
âPlease, give me a chance to reach him,â I begged.
